How Motorcycle Vest Patches Are Laid Out
Most club vests follow a familiar layout. The back carries the main design, while the front holds smaller patches for names, roles and events. Before you design anything, it helps to know each piece.
Top rocker
A curved banner across the upper back, usually with the club name.
Center patch
The club's main emblem in the middle of the back. It's often the largest and most detailed piece.
Bottom rocker
A curved banner under the center patch, often showing a region, state or chapter.
Side rockers
Small vertical or curved pieces beside the center patch for extra text.
Together, the top rocker, center patch and bottom rocker form a 3-piece set. Some clubs use a 1-piece back patch instead. In addition, front patches often include a name tab, a role tab and ride or event patches.
Sizing Custom Motorcycle Patches for Your Vest
Measure the back of the smallest vest in your club first. That way the full set fits every member, not just the larger sizes. Next, leave a little space between pieces so the leather can flex.
| Piece | Common size range | Shape |
|---|---|---|
| Top rocker | 11–14 in. wide | Curved banner |
| Center patch | 8–11 in. wide | Round, shield or custom |
| Bottom rocker | 11–14 in. wide | Curved banner, reversed arc |
| Front name or role tab | 3.5–4 in. wide | Rectangle |
Larger pieces need firm structure. For example, a heavy twill base and full stitch coverage keep a 10-inch center patch from puckering. See our custom back patches page for more on large designs.
Custom Motorcycle Patches Built for the Road
Biker patches face sun, rain, wind and years of wear. Therefore, we recommend embroidered patches with 100% stitch coverage and a merrowed border. A merrowed edge wraps the twill in thread, which resists fraying better on curved rockers.
- Thread: polyester holds color well in sunlight and washing.
- Base: twill in black, white or any color in your design.
- Borders: merrowed for rockers and round patches; heat-cut for complex shapes.
- Backing: sew-on is standard for leather vests. Heat-seal is not recommended for leather.
Some riders also want a leather look. In that case, a custom leather patch with a debossed or laser-engraved design fits well on the front.
Design Tips for MC Patches and Rockers
Rocker text follows a curve, so letters spread out at the ends. Because of that, short names fit more comfortably than long ones. If your club name is long, a slightly flatter arc keeps each letter upright and easy to read.
- Use bold block or Old English letters at least an inch tall on rockers.
- Match the rocker colors to the center patch so the set reads as one piece.
- Keep the center emblem simple enough to recognize from across a parking lot.
- Choose a unique name and emblem, so your club isn't confused with another group.
Not sure about a layout? Send a rough sketch with your custom motorcycle patches request. Our team will suggest rocker curves, letter sizes and spacing on the proof.
Keeping Your Club Design Confidential
Club colors belong to the club. For that reason, tell us when you order that your design is private. We'll keep it out of our gallery and social posts unless you give written permission.
If your club wants extra control, name the officers who can approve orders and reorders. Then we'll check any new request for your design with those contacts first.
Matching Motorcycle Club Patches on Reorders
New members need patches that match the vests already in the club. Even a slight shift in red or gold stands out at a rally. So we record thread references, sizes and border colors on your approved proof.
When you reorder, mention your original order details. As a result, we can rebuild the same set without starting over.

Motorcycle Patches: Frequently Asked Questions
What is a 3-piece motorcycle patch set?
It's a top rocker, a center patch and a bottom rocker worn on the back of a vest. Many riding clubs use this layout, while others use a single back patch.
Can you make side rockers and front patches too?
Yes. We make side rockers, name tabs, role tabs and event patches. Order them with your back set so the colors match.
Will you share our club design with anyone else?
Tell us your design is private and we'll keep it out of our gallery and social posts unless you give written permission. You can also name a contact who must approve any reorder.
How do I attach patches to a leather vest?
Sewing is the best method for leather. Use a heavy needle and strong polyester thread, or take the vest to a leather shop. Iron-on backing doesn't bond well to leather.
How do we make sure new members' patches match?
Reorder from the same approved proof. We keep the thread references, sizes and border colors on file with your order details.
Can individual riders order custom biker patches?
Yes. Solo riders order name patches, ride patches and back designs for their own vests. The same materials and process apply.
