Custom Police Patches

Custom police patches have to match the patch already on every uniform in your department, so color and shape consistency come first. We make shoulder patches, vest panels and tactical ID patches from your artwork, in embroidery or PVC.

In addition, we work with sheriff's offices, campus police, corrections teams and private security companies. You send the current patch or design file, and we build a digital proof before anything is produced.

  • Thread colors matched to your existing patch
  • Merrowed or heat-cut borders
  • Sew-on, hook-and-loop or heat-seal backing
  • Full-color or subdued versions of one design

What Departments Need From Custom Police Patches

A police patch is part of the uniform standard. Therefore, the new batch must look like the old batch when officers stand side by side. Small shifts in gold, blue or red thread stand out quickly on a navy or tan shirt.

That's why we start with your current patch whenever possible. A physical sample or a high-resolution photo lets us match thread colors, border width and overall size. Next, we note those details on the proof so you can check them before production.

Authorization for department insignia

Official shoulder patches and badges identify sworn personnel. For that reason, we may ask you to confirm you're authorized to order department insignia. This usually means an order from the department, an agency email or a purchasing contact we can verify.

Color Matching and Reorder Consistency

Embroidery thread comes in hundreds of shades of polyester and rayon. As a result, two "navy" threads can look different under station lighting. We record the exact thread references used on your approved proof.

When you reorder, those references come back with the file. In addition, keeping the same twill base color, border type and stitch coverage helps each batch match the last. If you change suppliers, send a sample patch so we can match it.

Tip: keep two or three spare patches from each order in a drawer. They make the best color reference for future reorders.

Custom Police Patches for Shoulder, Vest and Tactical Gear

Where the patch goes shapes its size, backing and finish. For example, a shoulder patch is sewn to a long-sleeve shirt, while a vest ID panel needs to come off for washing or reassignment.

Most departments order police velcro patches for body armor carriers. The hook side goes on the patch and the loop side stays on the vest. Learn more about that system on our hook-and-loop patch page.

Subdued vs Full-Color Law Enforcement Patches

Full-color custom law enforcement patches show the department's colors and seal. They suit class A and class B uniforms, community events and recruiting. Subdued versions use black, gray, tan or olive thread instead.

Subdued patches suit SWAT, K-9 and patrol teams on dark carriers. Also, many agencies order both versions of the same design at the same time. Since the layout stays the same, both versions can come from one approved file.

Embroidered or PVC?

Embroidery on twill is the traditional choice for sleeves. Our custom embroidered patches use 75–100% stitch coverage for a full, solid look. However, a PVC police patch is molded from soft rubber, so it sheds water and wipes clean. See our custom PVC patches for how 2D and 3D molds work.

Patches for Security Teams and Specialty Units

Custom security patches follow the same rules as police patches, but they avoid look-alike police insignia. Clear words like "SECURITY" or the company name help the public tell them apart.

  • Name tapes and rank tabs for vests, often paired with custom name patches
  • K-9, marine, bike and traffic unit patches
  • Academy class and graduation patches
  • Morale-style team patches for internal use

Quality Checks on Custom Police Patches

Every batch is inspected before it ships. First, we compare sample patches against the approved proof for color, size and text. Then we check that the border is closed all the way around with no loose threads.

  • Lettering: small text such as badge numbers and city names must be crisp and fully legible.
  • Shape: each shield or arch must match the template so patches line up on every sleeve.
  • Backing: hook-and-loop must be stitched securely to the patch, not just glued.
  • Edges: heat-cut edges must be sealed so they don't fray after washing.

Because officers wear these patches every shift, small flaws matter. A crooked star or a thin border may pass at a glance, but it shows up quickly in a lineup.

Police Patches: Frequently Asked Questions

Can you match the colors of our current police patch?

Yes. Send a physical sample or a sharp photo taken in daylight. We match thread shades, twill color and border width, and the proof lists each thread so you can review it.

Do you need proof that we can order department insignia?

We may ask you to confirm you're authorized to order department insignia. Usually an agency email address or a purchasing contact is enough. This protects your department and the public.

What backing works best for police vest patches?

Hook-and-loop is the usual choice for vests and carriers. It lets officers swap ID panels or move them to a new carrier. Sleeve patches are normally sewn on.

Should we choose embroidered or PVC police patches?

Embroidery suits uniform sleeves and a traditional look. PVC suits tactical gear because it resists water and cleans easily. Many departments use both for different roles.

How do we keep reorders consistent?

Keep the same approved file, thread references, size and border on every order. We store those details with your proof. Also, sending a spare patch from the last order helps confirm the match.

Can private security companies order custom patches?

Yes. Custom security patches should clearly say "Security" or show your company name. Avoid designs that could be mistaken for police insignia.
